Chapter 3: The Consortium

Pain receives an invite to a recruitment open day from his accountant for a group calling itself "The Consortium". Seeking answers regarding the events in Spain a month prior, he heads off to the meeting with the Detulux crew in tow.

Also attending are several high-profile criminals, including the heads of the criminal organisation W.R.A.I.T.H, and several less reputable criminals including the two doctors, Smiffington and Gyrode...

The last Detulux Incorporated storyline before the comic became GunJunker.

Episode published on Monday 1st of October, 2018.

We haven't had the yellow narration box butt in to state which episodes Pain is flashing back to for dramatic purposes, but if you're interested:

I'd really like to say that I came up with all the pretentious marketing lingo by my lonesome but I actually nicked them from Weird Al's "Mission Statement" and Lemon Demon's "Redesign Your Logo" (both great songs).

Title - 132: "The Consortium"
Subtitle - xiv. "Bored Meeting"

(Mara addresses the assembled criminals from the head of the table.)

Mara: Before we start, I can't help but notice we're missing someone...? Has anyone seen Mr. Ryng at all?

(Pain and the Captain look at the empty seat next to them, marked with a placement card for "S. Ryng". Stood behind the chair, Goldfisher eyes the empty seat. Pain suddenly seems nervous and fingers his own shirt collar.)

Pain: Eh-heh! Funny story, actually! I heard he'd been killed in an unfortunate septic tank incident.

(Goldfisher quickly sits himself in the empty seat, smiling. Pain seems unimpressed, about to eat his sausage roll.)

Goldfisher: I'm sure he won't mind if I have his seat, in that case!

Narrator: 45 minutes later...

(The lights are out in the room, the only light coming from the presentation screen. Mara is presenting the slide while stood at the head of the table using a laser pointer. All the villains are engrossed. The slide itself is a confusing series of boxes and arrows featuring the following pretentious phrases: "BRAND REPUTATION", "CLIENT CENTRIC SOLUTIONS", "SYNERGY", "MONETISE ASSETS", "INNOVATION" AND "CONVENTION". The slide is watermarked with the Consortium logo.)

Mara: ...and, in summary, that results in a net profit; both monetary and in terms of resources. Your weaknesses can be bolstered by other members of the Consortium. It's like a club of sorts. One that provides great perks and insurance for your continual business.

(Staring intensely at Mara, Pain has flashbacks to the events of Spain one month prior, each panel depicting his perspective of events. The first one is of her pointing her gun at him after the defeat of Almond Burdener.)

Mara (in flashback): I need that sample.

(The second flashback is to an hour before, when they met each other at this event.)

Mara (in flashback): I do remember hearing about someone trying to get a bioweapon for the Consortium.

(The next flashback is from Spain after Pain, Ben and the Captain escaped from the castle; Mara sits in a speedboat looking at her nails.)

Mara (in flashback): If you want the Master Fluga sample then you need to go to Burdener's private island.

(The last flashback is of Jack Bauser, pinning Pain down and about to stab him with Pain's knife. He looks off thoughtfully, distracted for the moment.)

Bauser (in flashback): All for the Consortium's sake.

(Back in the room, Pain leans his face into his hands thoughtfully. The Captain, who is stood behind him looking skeptical, watches him.)

Pain: (muttering to himself) ...I need to have a private chat with my accountant.
Captain: Sure. "Chat".
