Chapter 2: An Inspector Calls

The Detulux team are shocked when the latest INTERPOL agent assigned to their case, Inspector Jacques Russo, puts two-and-two together and realises that Detulux Incorporated the legitimate domestics supplier might have something to do with Detulux Incorporated the illegal arms trading firm.

There's a mad scramble as Inspector Russo makes a surprise visit to Detulux HQ. Will Russo find evidence of a link and arrest the team? Is Pain really dressing as Doc Holliday and putting on a terrible Southern drawl as a disguise? What does Pain's (very expensive) solicitor have to say about all this?

Page Notes

Episode published on Sunday 18th of September, 2016.

While not explicitly stated here, the accounts office is where Samara Kyler (a.k.a. "Samada Wrong") spends some of her time when she's on-site as the accountant. She's only part-time.

Artist's note: It's probably a good thing Mara doesn't let Pain have a key as he's clearly forgetting that not only is there an "in tray" that holds paperwork, but also there's also a basket attached to the door that henchmen have been posting more paperwork into for Mara to look at for when she gets back. Would have made for an awkward encounter, especially as "I don't know what those papers were doing there, I keep telling her to burn everything" probably won't hold up in court...

Title - 103: "An Inspector Calls"
Subtitle - xiv. "The Unaccountable Accounts Office"

(Inspector Russo finds a door with "ACCOUNTS OFFICE - PRIVATE" written on it. There's a letter box on the door.)

Russo: Yur accounts office...? Zis, ai would bé intairested een lookeng at, vairy much!
Paine: Ahm afraid we can't go in theyah.

(Russo removes a piece of paper from his coat and looks at it, slightly crestfallen.)

Russo: It's not on ze leest of restrictéd ruhms...?
Paine: It's more a case that the door is locked and we don't have the key. Mah accountant does not trust me with one!
Slymme: She's probably afraid you'll check the numbers...

(Pain quickly glares at Slymme, who rolls his eyes.)

Paine: Beg pardon?
Slymme: I'm sure the numbers are perfectly fine.

(Slymme scratches his chin, talking to himself in thought.)

Slymme: [However, it is good to know that she's not around today.]

(Slymme is suddenly in shadow and is lit by a sinister light as he steeples his fingers together.)

Slymme: (still to himself) It's going to be a very good day indeed.

(It's revealed that the sinister light is just because the hallway light is blinking off and on as it shorts out.)

Paine: Ah must get someone to fix that darn light...

(Pain turns to Russo, who begins walking away with his hands behind his back.)

Paine: If'n ya really want me to fetch a locksmith-
Russo: Non, non. Whatevair insidious financial transacshe-ons you mai be 'uldeng papairwairk fair weehl be safe fair anothair dai.

(Pain looks over his shoulder at Slymme, conspiratorially.)

Pain: (quietly) Paperwork! What paperwork?

(Inside the accounts office, we see an "in" tray on Mara's desk with a single sheet of paper in it. There's a big tin bin next to the desk with burn marks all around its edges. There's some scorching on the side of the desk too. The bin is labelled "OUT". A book of matches and a squirty bottle of petrol sit on the desk above the bin. The squirty bottle has had "PETROL" crossed out and a yellow sticky note next to the label has had "Redaction fluid" written on it, along with a smiley face. There's also a fire extinguisher to hand too, mounted next to the bin. The desk features a framed photograph of Pain, relaxing in a chair with his tie undone, raising a glass presumably containing alcohol.)

Episode tagline: I really can't recommend that you burn confidential documents in a bin next to your desk. Buy a shredder instead - they're safer and just as fun!
