Chapter 3: The Consortium

Pain receives an invite to a recruitment open day from his accountant for a group calling itself "The Consortium". Seeking answers regarding the events in Spain a month prior, he heads off to the meeting with the Detulux crew in tow.

Also attending are several high-profile criminals, including the heads of the criminal organisation W.R.A.I.T.H, and several less reputable criminals including the two doctors, Smiffington and Gyrode...

The last Detulux Incorporated storyline before the comic became GunJunker.

Page Notes

Episode published on Sunday 17th of December, 2017.

I get the joy of writing really complicated scenes for Sam to draw. Originally the henchman room was a crowded room but I insisted on the "Where's Waldo" style image, which is a real pain in the arse to draw apparently!

See how many familiar faces you can recognise...

Title - 121: "The Consortium"
Subtitle - iv. "The Henchman Room"

(Pain's entourage follows Grünveldt's down a long grey corridor.)

Captain: This Consortium must be pretty serious if they want to sign on *W.R.A.I.T.H.
Narrator: *Worldwide Resource for Anarchy, International Terrorism and Hostilities
Pain: I'm quite impressed, actually.

(Pain imagines Grünveldt in a pink dressing gown and slippers laid back in a comfy chair watching a bank of televisions embedded into a rocky wall. On a table next ot him is a box of bon bons.)

Pain: It's rare for Grünveldt to make a physical appearance. He usually prefers doing everything from his easy chair over a video call from a mountain cave somewhere.

(A bald black-suited henchman halts them, pointing to a door with a note that reads "HIRED HELP" sticky-taped to it.)

Henchman: Hired muscle, bodyguards and henchmen need to step this way, please. We only want the top figures on the main floor.
Pain: (to Ben, Lenny and the elite henchmen) You heard 'em, lads.

(Ben and the henchmen shuffle off through the door. Pain points at the Captain to the bald suit.)

Pain: I can take my right-hand lackey though, right?
Henchman: That's fine. Sycophants, lackies, assistants and confidantes are allowed.

(Pain smiles.)

Pain: What about toadies, flunkies, lickspittles and minions?
Henchmen: (annoyed) Don't take the piss.

(In the large "hired help" room are a lot of henchmen and bodyguards. These include:

  • Some "kinky" mercenary nuns from Hitman: Absolution.
  • Bob the Goon from Batman (1989) and Captain Clown from Batman: The Animated Series.
  • Jesse, James and Meowth from Team Rocket (Pokémon). Jesse is mistakenly attempting to capture some of the Minions from Despicable Me.
  • Mercenary Tao Pai Pai and Captain Blue from Dragonball. The former is licking the latter on the cheek.
  • Oddjob, Nick Nack and Tee Hee from various James Bond films.
  • Shego and some of Dr. Drakken's henchmen from Kim Possible. Shego is fighting with Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill while Drakken's henchmen and some Foot Clan members from the 80's cartoon version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cheer on.
  • A man who looks suspiciously like the Blob from Marvel comics, but probably isn't.
  • A handful of Stormtroopers from Star Wars. One of them is confused by the presence of one of the henchmen from Space Balls.
  • A JACK and Prototype JACK, a.k.a. P-JACK from the Tekken series. They are randomly doing a cossack dance.
  • Mr. T.
  • A few of the Monarch's henchmen from The Venture Bros.
  • Three antropomorphic henchpersons that look like a cross between the hyenas from the Lion King and the weasles from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • A farmer. It's actually 'Matalo Guy' from the Occupant Sin 4 storyline.
  • Two imposing zealots in red robes.
  • A handful of catmen in armour.
  • A couple of henchmen in trenchcoats and fedoras.

Off to one side of the room, slumped in the room's only chair is a big man in a blue suit with parted hair. He sees Ben and scowls, revealing metal teeth. He stands and approaches Ben. For a moment it looks like there might be a conflict, when suddenly they embrace.)

Ben: Aww i's mah wee cousin! How yeh doin'?
