Chapter 3: The Consortium

Pain receives an invite to a recruitment open day from his accountant for a group calling itself "The Consortium". Seeking answers regarding the events in Spain a month prior, he heads off to the meeting with the Detulux crew in tow.

Also attending are several high-profile criminals, including the heads of the criminal organisation W.R.A.I.T.H, and several less reputable criminals including the two doctors, Smiffington and Gyrode...

The last Detulux Incorporated storyline before the comic became GunJunker.

Page Notes

Episode published on Sunday 3rd of September, 2017.

While we flagged up in the episode Bauser's muttered "Consortium" reference, we apparently failed to flag up the episode where Pain's accountant threatened to shoot him (which was back in episode 75).

Title - 119: "The Consortium"
Subtitle - i. "An Invite Sealed with a Kiss"

(We see a view from someone's perspective as they run down a very clinical-looking white corridor. We can hear them puffing and panting, out of breath. The walls are lined with glass windows looking in on cells. At the end of the corridor is a wooden door with an unusual symbol on it that appears to be an omega with a number 7 on top of it. The end of the corridor has smears of blood on the walls and floor. The person's hands reach for the door and just before they get to it Pain jolts upright in his bed back at Detulux with a GASP. He's wearing his purple pyjamas and is sharing the bed with his cat Snowball. Sweating profusely, Pain rubs his head and glances sideways at the clock. It's five minutes to twelve, just before midday; he's woken up five minutes earlier than he likes. Annoyed, he collapses back on to the pillow, still rubbing his head.)

Pain: Not again!

(There are three knocks on his office door. The Captain opens one of the doors a crack and peeks through.)

Captain: You awake in there, Boss?

(Pain now has both hands on his head and is very annoyed.)

Pain: I'm up! For all the good it'll do me...

(The Captain enters, opening the door fully and holding a letter. The only light in the office is from the open door. Pain sits on the side of his bed and puts on his glasses, Snowball seems confused that he's been disturbed.)

Captain: Oh good! I've got mail for you!
Pain: Oh joy. What's it this time? Henchman's Union trying to extort more money out of me? Or perhaps someone else is investigating me now?

(The Captain looks at the envelope in his hand, the other hand on his hip.)

Captain: I'm not sure. I think it has something to do with a bird.

(Pain strokes Snowball's head, much to the cat's appreciation. The Captain is looking at the back of the envelope, which has a pink stain on it and the word "SWALK", an acronym for "Sealed With A Loving Kiss".)

Pain: What?
Snowball: Mroaw!
Captain: It's got a bird call written here.

(Standing up, Pain snatches the envelope out of the Captain's hand.)

Pain: Give me that! (happy) It's from 'mara! (regaining composure) Ahem. I mean Samara. Ms. Kyler. The Accountant.
Captain: What does she want?

(Pain opens the letter. Inside is a very neatly hand-written note. Captain looks at it over Pain's shoulder.)

Letter: Please attend if convenient. If not, then attend all the same. Love Mara. xxx
Captain: Attend what?
Pain: There's a leaflet in here.

(Pain removes a black leaflet from the envelope. On the front is a triangular logo in white and red, showing a big "A" overlaid on a globe. Underneath, in a stylised font, is the name "The Consortium".)

Pain: "The Consortium".
Captain: What's that?
Pain: Not very original, that's what it is. I can't think of a more generic name than "The Consortium".

(Pain seems unimpressed as he looks through the leaflet.)

Captain: I mean what-
Pain: If I was setting up some sort of tenuous alliance between criminal organisations with intent on getting them all to do my evil bidding for free and I wanted a professional-sounding name for the long-con, I'd probably call it "The Consortium".
Captain: Oh. So it's a criminal alliance thing, then.
Pain: Yeah, not for me thanks, pass. Have H.G. tell Samara I'm busy.

(Looking at the letter that came with the leaflet, the Captain notices something.)

Captain: Er, Boss? There's something on the back.

(Pain adjusts his glasses as he looks at the back of the letter.)

Pain: Hmm?
Letter: P.S. I have already spoken to H.G. and the Captain so I know you have sod all on your schedule. You're going. Love Mara (again). xxx

(Pain frowns at the Captain, who runs a finger around his collar in nervous embarrassment.)

Pain: Judus.
Captain: Eh heh. I don't get what the big deal is. She's just the accountant! Why do you have to do what she says?

(Captain gets annoyed, placing his hands on his hips.)

Captain: We haven't even seen her since Spain! She tried to shoot you! Remember?
Pain: Spain...

(Pain stares at the leaflet in thought, focusing on the "Consortium" name. He flashes back to one of the events of Spain. We see from Pain's perspective as Jack Bauser pins him down, about to stab him with his own knife. Bauser is muttering to himself.)

Bauser: All for the Consortium's sake...
Narrator: See back in episode 59!

(Pain smiles, holding up the leaflet and looking at the Captain over his shoulder.

Pain: On second thought, she's right. I don't have anything better to do today. Let's go see what this Consortium thing's all about!
