Chapter 2: An Inspector Calls

The Detulux team are shocked when the latest INTERPOL agent assigned to their case, Inspector Jacques Russo, puts two-and-two together and realises that Detulux Incorporated the legitimate domestics supplier might have something to do with Detulux Incorporated the illegal arms trading firm.

There's a mad scramble as Inspector Russo makes a surprise visit to Detulux HQ. Will Russo find evidence of a link and arrest the team? Is Pain really dressing as Doc Holliday and putting on a terrible Southern drawl as a disguise? What does Pain's (very expensive) solicitor have to say about all this?

Page Notes

Episode published on Sunday 9th of July, 2017.

I was watching Batman: Mask of the Phantasm with Sam recently and there's a bit where someone realises that the Joker was a random goon working for a gangster by adding a grin in red pen to a photograph. Apparently I just steal stuff subconsiously sometimes as I thought this clever scene was one I'd come up with by my lonesome.

Title - 117: "An Inspector Calls"
Subtitle - xxviii. "A Pain-ful Realisation"

Narrator: A week later...

(Russo is in an office, presumably one at the Sûreté they have designated for him. He is poring over papers pertinent to his assignment. Amongst the paperwork is the Polaroid he took from the Detulux staff room, which he holds in his hand and looks at. His mind flashes back to the tour at Detulux, and something Sebastian Paine said.)

Paine: Aw shucks, you don’t need ta have good eyesight to realise that, if you squint a bit, I’ve a passin’ ‘semblance to the white-suited fella.

(He repeats the moment in his mind, except this time Paine is wearing white trousers along with a black tie and blue shirt.)

Paine: -if you squint a bit, I’ve a passin’ ‘semblance to the white-suited fella.

(He repeats it again, except this time Paine is wearing a full white suit with a cream lapel. His beard is also now missing, only the moustache remaining.)

Paine: -I resemble the white-suited fella.

(He repeats it once more in his mind, except Sebastian Pain is now replaced entirely by Pain.)

Pain: I'm the white-suited fellow.

(There's a moment of realisation that crosses Russo's face.)

Russo: 'ang on a meenute...

(Grabbing a thick blue marker pen, he scribbles on the Polaroid. He adds a moustache, beard and fedora to Pain in the photo. It makes him look identical to Sebastian Paine. Russo angrily frowns at the photo, imagining a small cartoonish Pain bent over with laughter and pointing at him just over his shoulder.)

Russo: Ai knu eet!
Imaginary Pain: Hahahaha! Fooled you, Frenchie!

(Russo leaps up from his chair, causing it to topple over. He grabs his fedora and trenchcoat from a coat stand next to the office door and rushes out. We jump to him hanging out of the driver-side window of a police car, holding his hat and looking intense as the car zooms along the road, sirens blaring.)
