Chapter 0: The Obligatory Introductory Arc

A protestor breaks into Detulux Incorporated demanding to see the manager, not realising that they are biting off more than they can chew...

Page Notes

Episode published on Saturday 25th of June, 2005.

This is what passed for dramatic intrigue to my 17-year old mind. Unfortunately what came over as being voiced by the movie trailers guy in my head actually reads like exactly what it is: a 17-year old (with the plot sense of a 14-year old) trying desperately to write a dramatic opening for their webcomic. I've learned since then exactly how to start something off dramatically - blow something up (preferably an orphanage for that extra tragic edge) and then have the main characters abseil in on hang-gliders only using their teeth to grip.

At least I had the sense to try and use a ruler, but this was still way before the concept of digitally cleaning lineart dawned on me (and this version you see now has actually been cleaned up a little in comparison to its first incarnation!). Even the lighting in the fourth panel was added at a later date, the first version was just in shades of brown.

I have considered going back and making a new opening for Detulux, but it's just not worth the time and effort. Besides, I like looking at how awful these early strips are. They give me hope for the future, and who are you to take that away from me, you intangible 'net fascist?!?

Title - 01: "Setting the Scene"

(First panel - an aerial view of a large building near the end of a row of houses. It is four stories high and vast enough to have markings on its flat rooftop for a helicopter to land on.)

Narrator: On the outskirts of a small French town there is a warehouse.

(Second panel - a front-on view of the building. The colour of the building is various shades of brown, and the front is adorned with three entrances - two of these are normal sized doors, but the third entrance is a vast pair of sliding doors, like those on an aircraft hangar. The sky is bright blue and implies that the weather is that of a pleasant French Summer.)

Narrator: It lies unquestioned. And why not? It's only the storage facility for a well-known company.

(Third panel - an angled view on a signpost. The signpost is a two-legged steel construction with one overhanging lighting strip to illuminate the sign in the dark.)

Sign: "Detulux Incorporated. You want it? We've got it. A Branch of the S. Pain Corporation."
Narrator: Dealers in...well, you know, STUFF.

(The fourth and last panel - a dark interior illuminated with a dim light from above. A helicopter can be made out in the dimness, along with a tank, two large missiles, a crate marked "AK47 x 50", another crate marked "Stingers" and a third marked "Colt Pistols". There are other indistinguishable crates that fill the room.)

Narrator: What that stuff is, however, remains hidden from public eyes. And for a pretty damn good reason too.
