Chapter 0: The Obligatory Introductory Arc

A protestor breaks into Detulux Incorporated demanding to see the manager, not realising that they are biting off more than they can chew...

Page Notes

Episode published on Thursday 22nd of June, 2006.

And so we wrap up the first "storyline", if you could call it that. This was the point where I decided that I would probably be better off leaping into a new story and introducing new characters in a new situation. The purpose of this page was to heavily imply that the protester had legitimate means for being at Detulux uninvited, also because this comic is ostensibly about villains who do nasty things.

The middle panel (especially the zombie blank-eyed deer) was heavily influenced by the lineart of Nick Bradshaw on his work for the early strips for the Army of Darkness comic series by Dynamite Entertainment. I read the Army of Darkness series as a guilty pleasure as it is mostly an excuse for the protagonist from the Evil Dead films, Ash J. Williams, to use his chainsaw and boomstick to carve and shoot his way through hordes of deadites and other eclectic monsters (even Dracula, the Wolfman and, my personal favourite, the abominations created by Herbert West of the obscure Re-Animator films based on some of the short stories by H.P. Lovecraft). The jokes are bad or derivative of what Sam Raimi achieved in the films, the pages are usually filled with nothing but gore and gunshots, and you could summarise most of the plots on the back of your little finger, but I love them. Especially those first issues drawn by Nick Bradshaw, they're brilliant in particular because they really feel like the Evil Dead films - darkly comical stuff. So if you can find copies of "Ashes 2 Ashes", "Shop Till You Drop Dead" or "Army of Darkness vs. Re-Animator", I heartily recommend them.

That badly-drawn sign (even compared to the standards of this page) in the last panel? Totally drawn in because there was a huge gap there and I felt the need to fill it, just like episode 16.

Title - 19: "Mr. Nice-guy"

(Back at Detulux, Pain and the henchman leave the car that was parked outside of the bar in the last episode. They talk as they stroll along.)

New guy: Hey Boss, couldn't we have just shot the guy and saved ourselves the effort?
Pain: Nah, too messy. Besides, he wasn't completely in the wrong.
New guy: ...Huh?

(Pain explains, and we see a cut-away to a nearby forest. The ground is glowing an unsettling shade of luminous green in a certain area. A flower near it has grown evil eyes, a tongue and some teeth. A tree is smiling evilly where holes in its trunk happen to resemble a human facial expression. A bunny rabbit with claws, huge fangs and blank, undead eyes sits next to the glowing patch. Next to it stands a squirrel and a deer, both with the same blank eyes. The squirrel's right paw has mutated into a misshapen four-clawed hand covered in bloody veins, an acorn in its palm. The squirrel's two front teeth have grown into two long sabre-teeth. The deer has its mouth open widely and appears to be cackling with insanity. In short, the scene is a nightmare. As Pain explains, he jerks a thumb over his shoulder towards the nearest forest. He seems unconcerned.)

Pain: There's that half-tonne of uranium we've got buried out back. God knows what effect it's having on the wildlife.

(The henchman frowns, Pain grins in a sinister manner. Next to them is a welcome sign.)

New guy: Effect on wildlife...?
Pain: Not my problem.
Sign: Welcome to Detulux Incorporated. We hope you enjoy your stay. (In fine print) Lawyers and clowns can and will be shot on sight.
